Summary of APAPA NYC Grand Opening Celebration

by Sokie Hul 13. December 2012 17:29

Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), the establishment of the New York Chapter

Reported by Sing Tao Daily, World Journal, & China Press

Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA) has been established eleven years in California and just launched its New York Chapter in Flushing on December 2, 2012. The organization empowers its members to take part in public affairs, to nurture the next generation to become future leaders, and to increase the political and economic status of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the United States.

APAPA founder C. C Yin said that 11 years ago, the API community saw a need for and the importance of having representatives of API descent in public office, and this gave him and a few friends the insight to establish the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association, to nurture young people interested in politics to become future leaders. In recent years, the political and economic status of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans has increased significantly, and currently, APAPA has 20,000 members and 300 active volunteers. At the state level, API representatives in California grew from zero to 30, and even the mayor of the city of San Francisco is of Chinese descent. In this year’s congressional elections, there were 18 API candidates, six of which were elected to office.

The non-profit organization consists of all types of members, regardless of party preference. The three main core services include civic engagement, youth leadership, and community services. The organization provides its members with the opportunity to be proactive and to participate and educate themselves through voter’s registration, training and internship opportunities for the younger generation, workshops for financial literacy, and appointment programs to help members seek appointments in areas of government.

Congresswoman-elect Grace Meng said the creation of political history of Chinese in the United States is a joyous thing, but at the same time stresses that now should be the time to work hard to let the public see and understand the power in Asian and Pacific Islander communities. New York City Comptroller John Liu pointed out that the API population across the country has experienced substantial annual growth, according to the census data, but the number of elected representatives of API descent is not proportionate in comparison to the number of people in their respective communities. He said California’s participation in Asian politics has been a model for New York, with a female ethnic Chinese Congressmember-elect Grace Meng. Liu said, "With a Chinese mayor in San Francisco, who knows what will happen in New York?" Remarks won the audience with warm applause.

Welcoming remarks were received by Congresswoman Judy Chu, who sent a letter to congratulate the New York Chapter on its grand opening. Korean American Assemblyman-elect Ron Kim, New York State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan and New York Supreme Court Justice Peter Tom were among many of the elected officials who attended to support and congratulate APAPA at the grand opening of their New York Chapter.

New York Chapter Board: Justin Yu, chairman; vice chairs Cynthia Chou, Dr. Howard Shiang, and Michael Wang; secretary general Ching K. Chen; chief advisor Jenifer Lin; vice supervisor Cheng Hui; advisor Tim Yang.

The Sacramento Valley chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held its 10th Annual Banquet entitled “Upholding our Constitution: Defending our Faith” on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the Sacramento State Ballroom. CAIR, one of APAPA’s community partners, is America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group and works tirelessly to promote a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America. Over 900 people attended this banquet that celebrated CAIR’s accomplishments over the past ten years and set forth its goals for the future involving continuing to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

The inspirational program featured US Congressman Keith Ellison (5th District of Minnesota) who is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress and Imam Siraj Wahhaj who is the Religious Director of At-Taqwa Mosque in New York and is the Leader of the Muslim Alliance in North America. Attendees especially enjoyed the feast of Arab cuisine that was served which included traditional favorites such as lamb, eggplant, and kabobs.

Recap of Special Awards Ceremony and Press Conference in Celebration of the Passage of H. Res. 683

by Sokie Hul 6. July 2012 16:11

On July 3, 2012, a day before we celebrated the birth of our nation, APAPA hosted an awards ceremony and press conference commemorating the historic passage of House Resolution 683 “Regret for Chinese Exclusionary Laws”.

The recent passage of the House Resolution 683 “Regret for Chinese Exclusionary Laws” authored & introduced by Congresswoman Judy Chu, helped passed by Congressman Howard Berman, officially ended a dark chapter in our nation’s history.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first major law to single out and forbid a specific ethnic group, the Chinese, from immigrating to and becoming naturalized citizens of the United States.  It started as a law against the Chinese, later expanding against all Asians, and eventually against a wide range of immigrants. For example, the Geary Act of 1892 and the Alien Land Law of 1913 further prohibited the immigration and property ownership of many immigrants.

We are proud that under the leadership of Hon. Judy Chu, and the critical backing of Hon. Howard Berman, the community worked diligently together for many months rallying support from Congress and the general public.

While we are celebrating the historic achievement of this resolution, it is our intention to educate the community about the tremendous work and efforts of our leaders on behalf of our community.

Deputy Attorney General Al Muratsuchi presented the awards for the community. The event was covered by many mainstream and ethnic media channels.

There was a last minute change in the schedule. Due to a free spill on the San Francisco freeway, Honorable Betty Yee of the State Board of Equalization, who previously changed her schedule to help introduce the awardees, could not get to the airport in time. APAPA-SCR Vice President Elizabeth Huang stepped up to help introduce Hon. Judy Chu, and APAPA-CCC President Nicole Huang helped introduce Hon. Howard Berman at the last minute.

Many of the community leaders beat the Southern California traffic to attend and support:

Chris Phan, founding president of Vietnamese American Armed Forces Association. Al Muratsuchi, Torrance Unified School District Board Member. Adnan Khan, president of Council of Pakistan American Affairs. Trung Ta, Founder of Vietnamese American Democratic Organization. Dr. Chuching Wang, President of LA80-20 PAC. Michael Cheng, Community leader from Santa Barbara. Felicia Van Frank of our community partner-State Farm Insurance, and her colleagues. Johnny Chua and Tony Luciano, and friends of the Filipino Chamber of Commerce. Ron Cho, APAPA San Diego Chapter President. Jay Chen, President of Hacienda-La Puente School Board. Stephen Sham, Councilmember of City of Alhambra & President of Chinese-American Elected Officials (CEO). Mary Su, Mayor of City of Walnut. David Lau, Mayor of City of Monterey Park. Mary Ng, APAPA Southern California Region Vice President.
