APAPA Night with the Sacramento Kings
First Annual Event at Arco Arena February 3, 2010

By Lucy Oback, APAPA President

APAPA’s First Annual Night with the Sacramento Kings was at ARCO Arena on February 3, 2010. APAPA completely sold out 500 tickets in just a few weeks.

APAPA thanks Kevin Chan and Michael Ramos, Group Sales Manager, for making this fundraiser possible. They helped made the evening fun for everyone.

The exciting evening included meeting and taking photos with the beautiful Sacramento Kings cheerleaders. During halftime, Duper Tong, husband to Amy Tong, APAPA’s Vice Chair, volunteered to toss an extremely large basketball into a humongous hoop set up in the middle of the basketball court. APAPA threw 100 APAPA t-shirts into the crowd during game time.

To all who purchased tickets, thanks for making our first annual event with the Kings a resounding success. The proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards APAPA’s 2010 Internship & Scholarship program. We are looking forward to another Night with the Kings next year.

Haitian Disaster Relief Event
Sponsored by Sacramento Chinese Indo-china Friendship Association (SCIFA)

By Lucy Oback, APAPA President

On February 5, 2010, Sacramento Chinese Indo-china Friendship Association (SCIFA) held a fundraiser at Rice Bowl for the victims of the Haitian Earthquake Disaster. APAPA joined with many others in the API community to purchase tables at this event to help raise money to give to the American Red Cross.

Mayor Kevin Johnson thanked SCIFA for being a role model for other ethnic communities. He further shared that diversity is our city’s strength.

The whole evening was filled with high energy and excitement. Large donations came from owners of local supermarkets including New Asian, Welco, Ving Phat, and SF Supermarket. Two large casinos, Cache Creek and Casino Royale, were present that night to help with the fundraising. Musicians sang songs that encourage the guests to give out of their pockets. William Land Elementary School was recognized that evening for collecting $500 for the relief effort.

The program ended with an auction of donated items. Two Louis Vuitton handbags were sold for $1450 and $1250, respectively. Victor Phong donated a pro basketball signed by Shaquille O’Neal. Jerry Chong and Victor Phong convinced the audience that an authentically signed basketball is worth more than the Louis Vuitton handbags. The basketball sold for $2100. I guess they were right.

During the evening, SCIFA collected over $60,000 for Haiti.
