Sacramento, CA – The Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA) strongly encourages the California Governor Gavin Newsom to appoint an Asian American to serve as the Attorney General of California. There are many eminently qualified Asian Pacific Islander American members serving in the State Legislature and in Congress who are exemplary candidates to serve as California’s next Attorney General.
APIA are among the fastest-growing racial and ethnic minorities in our Golden State, while simultaneously, we have a long history of significant contribution going back to the Gold Rush days. Unfortunately, this history also included the Chinese Exclusion Act, the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II, and other discriminatory practices that are still prevalent in California and throughout the United States today. We continue to support Governor Newsom’s record of inclusion of diversity within his administration and his support of elected minority leaders governing California.
We applaud the Governor appointing the first Latino to serve in the U.S. Senate. We urge the Governor appoint another Asian Pacific Islander American to follow Kamala Harris to serve as the next Attorney General.
APAPA is a non-profit, non-partisan and grassroots organization. Its mission is to empower Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans through education, leadership, and active participation in civic and public affairs.
