On March 23rd, our organization, along with 50 other Asian American and Jewish American organizations released an open letter to President Trump requesting that the President and the administration cease using the term “Chinese virus” in describing COVID-19 as the term has been used by racists to inflame hatred and xenophobia and to encourage physical violence directed against Chinese and Asian Americans.
We learned later that the President refrained from using the term “Chinese virus” in his press conference and he also stated that Asian Americans are allies in the fight against this virus. We would like to encourage the President to continue to use the medical term in describing the virus.
We also appreciate the following statement on Twitter:
It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world. They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form. They are working closely with us to get rid of it. WE WILL PREVAIL TOGETHER!
We stand with our US government in efforts to eradicate this novel virus and to ensure America comes out of the current crisis stronger than ever.
